ESS WORKSHOP FOR GRADE 11
18 to 19 October, 2012
‘There is a galactic difference between education and learning—Learning is just attaining knowledge from books; however, on the contrary, education is knowledge applied.’ The humanities department comprises of environmental studies as a subject which supports the ideology of creating enough exposure for students in order to apply their theoretical knowledge in the practical world. A two-day workshop was, therefore, conducted, to explore deeper into the subject.
The first day’s workshop was conducted by Mr. Krishnendu Bose, renowned wildlife filmmaker, and Mr. Dharma, an environmentalist. The chief guests enlightened the students on how animals suffer due to anthropogenic causes. There was a burning discussion amongst the students and Mr. Dharma. The volume of voices reached its pinnacle when the students fought for their viewpoints to prove them to be valid and realistic. The second day of the workshop was continued with much gusto, zest and enthusiasm. At the crack of dawn, all the Grade 11 ESS students promenaded into the bird sanctuary to get an insight into the diverse range of birds that exist. The walk was led by Mr .Nikhil Devasar, President of the Delhi Bird Society and also an experienced and passionate bird watcher. The never-ending questions posed by students seemed to interest Mr. Devasar and were patiently answered. The workshop was a good learning experience for all. Apart from satisfying the main objective of relating the workshop to the learning objective of ECOSYSTEMS, students were also able to develop qualities of an IB Learner such as being knowledgeable, inquirer, open minded, and the rest!
All of us Grade 11 ESS students would like to thank our teachers Mr. Gurucharan Kumar &Ms. Bhagirathy Jhingran whose initiative and effort for this workshop provided us with such wonderful experiences.
