GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES: FIELD VISIT 19TH NOV 2011
On Saturday morning, at 7:00 in the morning, a group of seven children and two teachers could be seen driving to a secluded patch of forest under the guidance of Mrs.Bhagirathi, GP teacher
Now, you might be wondering they were doing at that early hour on a weekend. They were (or we were) meeting up with ecologist Pradip Krishan, is an Indian filmmaker and environmentalist. He directed three ground breaking film, namely, Massey Sahib in 1985, In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones in 1989 and Electric Moon for Channel 4, UK in 1991
His films have won significant Indian and international award,
He is the author of ‘Trees of Delhi’ A Field Guide, met with popular and critical acclaims, and became a bestseller in India, and husband of famous writer Arundhati Roy. We were, in fact, the GP class of Grade 9 and were currently studying Biodiversity under the watchful eye of Mrs. Bhagirathi & Mr. Guru. To better understand this topic, we’d contacted Pradip Ji and visited the Magarbani area with him acting as our helpful instructor.
The area was exceedingly beautiful and Pradip Ji took us for a walk through that are and explained the set up of the forest and gave us a good idea of the flora of the area. Pradip Ji was very charming and an amazing teacher. He told us about a number of trees and grasses. The Dhau tree is an indigenous plant which has remarkable abilities. If nibbled at by an animal, it will grow parallel to the ground and no higher than your shins. An invader species, the Velaiti Keekar, is a tree adapted to extremely dry conditions and grows well her. However, in doing so, it is killing the native plants.
He also mentioned trees like- Flame of The Forest and Indian Frankincense. All in all, it was a great experience and we all learned a lot.
